20 Years of Gerstein Fisher

Gerstein Fisher was born of a vision: Gregg S. Fisher’s vision in 1993 of a firm that seamlessly integrated investment management, financial planning and tax management under one roof. Our timeline reflects Gerstein Fisher remaining as visionary and innovative as ever.

  • 1978

    Ed Gerstein starts a family-owned tax business designed to help individuals with their tax preparation needs, catering to the new group of baby boomers starting their careers in New York City.

  • 1985

    Ed’s nephew, Gregg S. Fisher, begins working in the family business just as computing and technology are beginning to revolutionize the way businesses operate. Gregg is instrumental in helping his uncle apply technology to the analysis of large quantities of tax data.

  • 1992

    Gregg graduates from SUNY Buffalo with a degree in finance.

    Eugene Fama and Kenneth French’s research on size and value premia is published in The Journal of Finance; Eugene Fama and David Booth receive the Graham and Dodd Award of Excellence for their article, “Diversification Returns and Asset Contributions.”

    Influenced by Fama, French and Booth’s ideas around risk premia and asset class investing, Gregg begins practicing as a financial planner and investment advisor.

  • 1993

    Gregg opens Gerstein Fisher, one of the first firms to integrate investment management, financial planning, and tax management under one roof.

  • 1996

    Gerstein Fisher opens its first office in Manhattan’s financial district, at 90 William Street, adjacent to the New York Federal Reserve.

  • 2000

    Gerstein Fisher’s assets under management surpass the $100 million mark.

    Gerstein Fisher is hired by its first international client.

  • 2004

    Gregg receives the designation of Chartered Financial Analyst.

    GFA Securities, Gerstein Fisher’s broker-dealer affiliate, is formed.

  • 2005

    Assets under management exceed $500 million.

  • 2006

    Gerstein Fisher launches its popular Real Talks event series, designed to provide research-based investment perspective to clients on important topics with featured speakers drawn from the firm’s network of leading-edge academic experts and business thought leaders.

  • 2009

    The Gerstein Fisher Research Center is launched, formalizing an ongoing feedback loop between Gerstein Fisher’s Investment Strategy Group and a select circle of leading finance, risk, and economics professors from prestigious academic institutions who share common areas of research inquiry.

  • 2010

    Gerstein Fisher surpasses over $1 billion in assets under management and is named for the first time in Barron’s Top 100 Advisors list, which tracks the performance of advisory firms across the country.

    The firm launches the Gerstein Fisher Multi-Factor Growth Equity Fund (GFMGX) based on years of time-tested academic research.

  • 2011

    Gerstein Fisher formalizes its Strategic Advisory Board of seasoned industry experts who offer counsel on business strategy and operational and service excellence.

    The Journal of Wealth Management publishes groundbreaking research co-authored by Gregg S. Fisher and academic partner Dr. Phillip Maymin entitled “Preventing Emotional Investing: An Added Value of an Investment Advisor”.

  • 2012

    Gerstein Fisher launches the Gerstein Fisher International Multi-Factor Growth Equity Fund (GFIGX).

  • 2013

    Gerstein Fisher launches the Gerstein Fisher Multi-Factor Global Real Estate Securities Fund (GFMRX).

  • Gerstein Fisher joins People’s United Bank, one of the largest independent banks in the Northeast.
