Citizenship at Gerstein Fisher
Our team members play an active role as citizens in our community across three principal areas: education and charities for youth, foundation work, and the academic research community. All of these endeavors are a natural extension of Gerstein Fisher’s commitment to helping individuals make positive decisions about their financial lives.
Much like the way we invest and work with our clients, our approach to community involvement is hands-on. It can take the form of organizing benefits, donating computers or other equipment, or opening the firms’ doors to youth programs in need of gathering facilities. Gerstein Fisher also assists many charities with their investments, from broad-based asset allocation and investment management to tactical issues such as managing accounts for charitable contributions.
Commitment to Youth
As a youth, our founder, Gregg S. Fisher experienced firsthand the power of positive choices and influences on young people—and the equally powerful consequences of their absence. This experience fostered an interest, in his adult life, in supporting organizations that provide disadvantaged youth with opportunities they might not otherwise have to become involved with art, music, sports, community service, entrepreneurial pursuits, or other activities that instill a sense of purpose, build self-esteem, and help connect them with others and with their community in a positive way. Today Gerstein Fisher supports and works closely with a wide range of charitable organizations focused on youth, mostly right here in the New York metropolitan area. Some examples include ART START, an award-winning, nationally recognized model for using the creative arts to transform young, at-risk lives, and the DOME Project (Developing Opportunities through Meaningful Education), which dedicates itself to meeting the complex needs of young people in trouble with the law, their schools, and themselves by helping them to develop the necessary skills to regain a sense of self-worth and prepare for success in their education and beyond.
Commitment to Philanthropy
Gerstein Fisher works hard to make sound financial advice more broadly accessible to individuals and organizations in our community by working closely with families and foundations. Our philanthropic work often takes the form of donating our services to support fundraising efforts and assisting non-profits with their investment needs. In past years, we have also offered pro bono financial counseling and education to families in need. As an example of this, following the September 11th terrorist attacks, we became involved with the Community Service Society (CSS) of New York’s Windows of Hope (WOH) Family Relief Fund, which was established to assist families and loved ones of hospitality workers who lost their lives in the attacks. Gerstein Fisher provided workshops on such topics as setting up and managing bank accounts, buying a home, planning for a child’s education, and managing credit for WOH families. We continue to work with many of these families today.
Additionally, Gerstein Fisher volunteers our time and expertise to Community Resource Exchange (CRE), a premier nonprofit management consulting firm that offers strategic advice and technical services to more than 300 community-based nonprofit organizations in the New York metropolitan area. By working with CRE, our educational resources can be extended to a broader network of nonprofits, allowing us to have a more far-reaching impact on the important charitable organizations around us and their missions.
Commitment to Academic Research
The firm’s deep commitment to the academic research community is reflected in the existence of the Gerstein Fisher Research Center, which was established in 2009 to investigate critical issues in finance and risk faced by individual investors through pioneering research that bridges the gap between academic theory and real-world financial practice. Connected with this mission, the Center has provided grants to establish university research programs and internships aimed at offering real-world experience to bright, rising-star risk engineering students. These programs enable students to enhance their studies through participation in various research projects under the supervision of university professors and investment practitioners from Gerstein Fisher, with the objective of producing actionable research insights. By helping to fund innovative research in these areas, we hope to contribute to an effort that will have a major impact on the well-being of not only individual investors but also our financial system and society as a whole.
